The online encyclopedia Wikipedia defines toxins as "poisonous
substances that are produced by living cells or organisms." They can
be small molecules, peptides or proteins that are capable of casing
disease on contact with or absorption by body tissues by interacting
with biological macromolecules such as enzymes or cellular
receptors. Toxins vary in their severity, ranging from minor or
acute to almost immediately deadly.
Environmental toxins on the other hand are chemicals and other
materials that are created largely from industry and carelessness.
These chemicals have penetrated our water, food and the very air
that we breathe. We can't see, feel or smell most of these toxins
and we only realize their effects until we acquire chronic diseases
after years of exposure.
There are 77,000 chemicals that are produced in North America. Over
3,000 chemicals are added to our food supply. Over 10,000 chemical
solvents, emulsifiers, and preservatives are used in food processing
and 1,000 new chemicals are introduced every year. Can you imagine
how much toxins and chemicals an average person has to come in
contact with?
The British Medical Journey has stated that 75% of most cancers are
caused by environmental and lifestyle factors. The Columbia
University School of Public Health likewise posit that an estimated
95% of cancer-related illnesses are caused by diet and environmental
toxicity. Right now, most Americans have between 400-800 chemicals
stored in their bodies.
