It may look absurd to develop dry skin from standing under a splash of water, however hot shower scorches your skin as the water evaporates. Our skin naturally produces oil that acts as a barricade between the skin and evil environment. Hot shower sluices this oil from the skin, removing its protection and leaving it feeling tight, dry and itchy. If you take long, hot water bath and the itching is most severe on your lower forearms and legs, dry skin is likely the culprit for your distress.
All that needs to be done is scale back the heat, take a shorter shower and apply a moisturizer on affected skin to avert itching.
An allergic reaction on the skin may raise itchy welt-like hives. In case, hives crop up post the shower itching, then probably you have an allergy to something in the water itself. Organic components like mildew and mold are the prime culprits for allergic reactions. Nevertheless, they must not be the only item on your allergy checklist. In case, you develop hives on very hot days or after exercise, you may have cholinergic urticaria, a medical term for heat-related hives.
Although heat-related hives are very rare, the remedy is simple, just lower the temperature of your shower to stop the itch.
Contact dermatitis or Irritants
Check the constituents of your soap, shampoo, conditioner, shower get and shaving cream that you use during bath. Sodium lauryl sulfate, a chemical extracted from coconut is utilized in most of the bathing products, which causes itch skin after shower. Chemicals used in toiletries and cosmetics can make the skin susceptible to itches and rashes.
Moreover, you towel may have traces of fabric softener or detergent. All these things cause contact dermatitis, a medical name for temporary skin irritation in response to stimulus. If you observe itching only after making a recent change in your bathing products, then you may have a mild case of contact dermatitis.
An unbalanced diet, deficient in vital nutrients cannot help retain moisture in the skin. Dry skin resulting from poor nutrition often activates the itching sensation.
Good Remedies to Prevent Itchy Skin after a Shower
Baking Soda Bath
Soaking in a bath of baking soda for around 30-40 minutes can make a great difference.
Add one cup of baking soda to a tub of lukewarm water. After the bath, it is essential to gently pat your skin dry with a towel.
There are several fabulous essential oils with soothing and anti-inflammatory properties that have the potency to provide relief to itchy skin and ward off irritations. You can add the oils to your bath water or apply them on the skin directly (I have been using lavender lately). Make sure to adhere to the dosage recommendations as mentioned on the package.
Some of the best essential oils to sooth itchy skin after a shower include Basil oil, Chamomile oil, Lavender oil, Agrimony oil, Calendula oil, Peppermint oil, Thyme oil, Clove oil, Jewelweed oil, Neem oil, Rosemary oil, Nettle oil, Geranium oil, Bay leaf oil and Chic weed oil etc.
Slice a piece of Aloe, squeeze the gel and apply on the itchy skin areas. The aloe-vera gel will not just moisturize your skin; it will form a protective layer as well, which will keep impurities away from entering your skin. Although aloe-vera is a great skin hydrant, it can leave your skin tight. Therefore, you might need to put on moisturizer.
Since cold and itch travels via the same nerve fibers, the usage of cold can “block the circuits” and muffle itch. Cold showers and ice packs can be a good remedy for itchy skin.
Mixing oatmeat in water and applying it on damaged skin can be soothing and cooling. Add 2 cups of colloidal oatmeat into lukewarm water and soak to appease your skin.
The above- mentioned remedies can help relive the torment of itchy skin after shower. However, you must consult your dermatologist before following any of the afore-stated remedies, as not all the remedies are clinically proven and they may not have the same effect on everyone.
